The death toll is still spiralling upwards and mass graves are being dug even as people hunt for the missing. The number of dead has went well into the thousands in some parts, and thousands more who may have been killed have not been found.

As the refugees came out from their underground shelters, the damaged done to the city hit them. Having been underground for days, they have not seen their homes for a long time. Buildings have collasped, rubble was all over the ground. What had used to be a bustling commerce centre, was now deserted, empty. The only people there were scavanging for food and valuables in desetroyed homes. A landslide from a nearby sent large rocks and mud into buildings at the foot of the mountain, burying people and buildings alike.

People wept and mourned dead relatives, and many more just stared at their house bought with their hard earned money, now destroyed.

Areas near the beach are the most badly hit. Reports say entire communities were swept into the sea. Whole towns have been flooded by the tidal waves caused by the quake. Packed holiday resorts were badly hit. Rescue was impossible, with no way to get near the beach without being swept away. People can be seen camping on rooftops to escape the relentless rapids. Countless of fishermen were also feared to have drowned off the coast. Authorities have sent planes and helicopters to scan the coastline, searching for survivors.

The extent of the damage done is still unknown, but it is obvious that the city was in ruins. Survivors have little clean water or food as they try to build shelters and bury the dead after the earthquake. As news of the major earthquake spread, viewers are moved by the state the survivors are in. They send in donations of food and money, to be sent to the hit areas.
