After you, my dear Alphonse : Blog Topic

Yes, i would have. Mrs. Wilson treats Boyd in that way because she is biased towards black people, generalizing them to be people with no education, and people that do manual labour for little pay. She also generalises them to have no family planning, and are poor and have no manners. This might be because she has never met a black person, and bases her views on someone else's. She might also want someone to intimidate and have someone lower class than her.

I think for most, it's the way people were raised by their parents and the influence of their friends when they were young.

I would not do the same, as i have more knowledge about black people, and I am not generalizing anything towards black people. My view would also be different as I have knowledge about the history of these people. Blacks are not much different from us, except from colour, which is ridiculuous. If someone is not the same race as me, how much different can they be? I will also treat Boyd differently because I know more about black people, thus i understand them more.

The death toll is still spiralling upwards and mass graves are being dug even as people hunt for the missing. The number of dead has went well into the thousands in some parts, and thousands more who may have been killed have not been found.

As the refugees came out from their underground shelters, the damaged done to the city hit them. Having been underground for days, they have not seen their homes for a long time. Buildings have collasped, rubble was all over the ground. What had used to be a bustling commerce centre, was now deserted, empty. The only people there were scavanging for food and valuables in desetroyed homes. A landslide from a nearby sent large rocks and mud into buildings at the foot of the mountain, burying people and buildings alike.

People wept and mourned dead relatives, and many more just stared at their house bought with their hard earned money, now destroyed.

Areas near the beach are the most badly hit. Reports say entire communities were swept into the sea. Whole towns have been flooded by the tidal waves caused by the quake. Packed holiday resorts were badly hit. Rescue was impossible, with no way to get near the beach without being swept away. People can be seen camping on rooftops to escape the relentless rapids. Countless of fishermen were also feared to have drowned off the coast. Authorities have sent planes and helicopters to scan the coastline, searching for survivors.

The extent of the damage done is still unknown, but it is obvious that the city was in ruins. Survivors have little clean water or food as they try to build shelters and bury the dead after the earthquake. As news of the major earthquake spread, viewers are moved by the state the survivors are in. They send in donations of food and money, to be sent to the hit areas.

For many years, illegal fishing have been ravaging the seas. Many attempts have been made by the government to curb this exercise, but to no avail. Illegal fishing is also known as illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU).IUU fishing is a serious global problem, one of the main reasons that slows the achievement of sustainable world fisheries. Worth between $4billion and $9billion per year, IUU fishing is a major loss of revenue, especially to some of the poorer countries in the world, which depends on fish to produce revenue.

Illegal fishing is when a vessel violates the rules of the regional fisheries and the laws the government implemented on the area. For example, they fish too much of a same species, or fish a protected species. The captains of these vessels are usually extremely clear about the rules, and are fully aware of breaking them.

Such activity have high profits, thus fishers usually turn to it as a method for fast and easy money. Without the restrictions placed on them, they are able to fish large amounts of fish and fish rare and endangered species that can fetch a lot of money.

The biggest economic impact of illegal fishing on developing countries is the direct loss of the value of the catches that could be taken by local fishermen if the IUU fishing was not taking place. In addition to this are the loss of revenue from landing fees, licence fees and taxes payable by legal fishing operators. There are also indirect impacts in terms of loss of income and employment in related industries; and any loss in income will also have impacts on the consumer demands of families working in the fishing industry

Then, there are the environment impacts. Illegal fishing have a significant negative impact on the environment. Illegal fishing have damaged the fragile ecosystems in the area, especially extremely vulnerable species like coral reefs, sea birds and more. This will result in a snowball effect. When a species' population decrease, the population of its predator will also decrease, and the population of some other species will increase, upsetting the balance of the ecosystem.

In the modern society, professional sports careers are mostly short lived and requires much effort to be even slightly successful. It is diffucult for one to be successful as you have numerous competitors training just as hard or even harder than you. It is also diffucult for you to find a suitable and willing coach. Even if manage to achieve a medal or even break a record, other people will overtake you in no time. These careers also require the time and money to train and buy equipments. Even if you mange to become successful, your career will end quickly as sports careers have a specific age limit, which requires you to quit after a certain age. Thus, sports careers are not really profitable and just short-term.

So why should one join this shord-lived career? Many people do not think that this is an option for them as they want a stable career to last them their lives. However, i do not agree with them. Anyone with a dream in sports should try for a professional sports career. The point of a sports career is not to earn one's life saving. It is to pursue your dream and to what you like. It should not matter how much money you earn. It is whether you like your career or not.

Therefore, I disagree that you should not join a professional sports career just because it is short-lived.

In the modern workforce, it is not uncommon to see women being the victim of sterotypes and biasedness. They typically receive less pay than male workers and they also get less benefits. A 2008 survey of CEO pay at 3,242 North American companies by the Corporate Library found that female CEOs earned more in base pay, but when cash bonuses, perks and stock compensation were included, women made a median $1.7 million, or 85% of what male CEOs made. This shows that people are more biased towards male employees, and give them more advantages and more bonuses.

Employers are generally more biased towards male workers because they feel that women tend to let things like shoes, handbags, make-up and relationships hamper their productivity. They are also afraid of female employees going on paid maternal leave, which is a great bane to them. This could also wreak havoc in the middle of a project, or in a position of importance. People usually feel that women should stay at home nurturing children and tend to domestic matters. They think that women are less capable than men in many aspects, such as manual labour.

I feel that women should deserve equal standing and opportunities as men. They do just as much work as men and they still have work to do when they get home, like cleaning the house and taking care of kids. Nobody's pay should be determined by their gender. Would you think it acceptable if pay was determined by a person's race or nationality? People should get paid based on there experience and the work that they do. If there is a woman and a man applying for the same job, and the woman has more experience. and both people were hired, the woman should be getting paid more.

How can one justify by giving someone more or less pay because of their gender? Gender does not affect how intellegent or how well one does his work. Women have just the same amount of potential that men have, and an equal amount of pay and opportunities should be adequet. Equal job should be equal to same pay.

Although women might not be suitable for some jobs, like manual labour, they are more suitable than men in other jobs, for example, precise jobs like sewing and mabye some lab jobs.

Therefore, I think that women should be given queal standing and opportunities in the workforce.

In any city, it is inevitable that we see bustling roads with numerous cars and most of the times, roads are clogged up with cars, especially during peak hours. Vehicles are moving at a crawl and even pedastrains walk faster than them. Sometimes, it is pointless to even drive, as walking is faster.

Traffic woes are part and parcel of a bustling city. This is an obvious fact if you have been to cities like New York. The transportation system is there to give us convenience, but sometimes, it becomes a bane to us when it is overused. It polutes the air, it slows down pedastrains, it creates noise pollution, and it is very slow.

Traffic congestion is caused by many reasons. Traffic congestion occurs when traffic's demand for space is greater than the available road capacity. Either that or the road capacity decreases. This is caused by accidents on the road, taking up a few lanes of the road. Traffic can be increased by festivals and events.

In a bustling city, there must be transportation for the population to get to their destination swifly and efficiently. Without a traffic system, people would have no way to get to work, which might be kilometres away, and thus, there will be too little employment, leading to the city having a small workforce.

Although the government have tried to ease traffic congestion, it is still not enough, and traffic congestion poses a big problem. In Singapore, ERP is invented to discourage drivers to drive on specific roads, thus helping to ease the traffic, although some people might not like it.

Our fossil fuels are running out. We cannot deny that. Scientists have predicted that oil will run out in 40 years, natural gas in 60 years adn coal in 220 years. People have suggested "renewable energy", but will this new source of energy to satisfy our crave for power and energy? Renewable energy has been a greatly controversial topic that has been brought up in recent years due to the oil crisis. Renewable energy is not new to us. It has been here for many years, since the oil crisis was predicted. Although renewable energy seems like our only hope, it is quite undeveloped, and we still have much to master.

There are many pros and cons to renewable energy. Here i am going to discuss them.
One of the major pros is that it produces little or none greenhouse gases. Burning fossil fuels usually produce greenhouse gases wich trap heat withing the earth, making it hotter every year. Renewable energy sources usually do not produce greenhouse gases, as they rely on other ways to spin the turbines to generate energy.

The second pro of renewable energy is of course, it is renewable. It does not require the burning of fossil fuels to make energy, so it can still produce power even after our oil supply runs out. It does not drain the limited amount of fossil fuels we already have, instead they tap into limitless sources of energy.

However, renewable energy also has a lot of cons.
Firstly, these new sources of energy are wuite expensive and not really worth it. They cost a lot more that the conventional burning of fossil fuels and it does not produce much energy compared to buring fossil fuels. That is why many countries prefer using fossil fuels to produce cheap energy. They also cost much money to research and perfect, and governments are usually reluctant in leaving so much money aside for research.

Secondly, renewable energy also sometimes causes changes to the environment. For example, hydroelectric energy makes use of water in order to produce power. It affects the ecology and causes downstream problems. Decay of vegetation on the riverbed can also cause a buildup of methane which contributes to the greenhouse effects. Dams may also cause an alteration of the natural river flow and affect wildlife in the area as well. Water which is colder and which is lacking in oxygen tends to be released into the water this kills the fish, sudden release of water like this may also result in flooding. Flooding can also be caused by the dam operators, who release the water too fast, causing the river to flood downstream.

Geothermal energy makes use of the steam from the Earth's ground in order to generate power. These plants can bring up toxic chemicals and heat from the earth when it tries to obtain the steam, releasing it into the area around it, killing wildlife around it. Drilling such geothermal reservoirs can also cost a lot.

With ocean energy, during construction and putting in place of pipes may damage the ecosystem.

Some renewable sources of energy are also erratic and does nto produce a constant supply of electricity.
For example, solar power is not a constant source of energyas it is also limited to the daytime as well as non-cloudy days.
. Solar radiation is also controlled by geography.

In wind energy, the wind turbines are huge and they have to be placed where little people are living. These places might not be suitable, as the wind might be too weak, or there is no wind at all. Wind turbines only produce electricity when there is strong wind, which cannot be gaurenteed.

Although renewable energy has many cons, it is currently our only opiton in creating energy without fossil fuels, with the exception of nuclear power. Until we discover a new way of producing power, we have no choice but to stick with the current methods of producing renewable energy.

I chose Edgar Allan Poe as my poet as his works are mostly philisophical and they focus on the bad aspects of human nature. His poems are mostly pessimistic.

EDGAR ALLEN POE was born in Boston, January 19, 1809, and after a tempestuous life of forty years, he died in the city of Baltimore, October 7, 1849.

His father, the son of a distinguished officer in the Revolutionary army, was educated for the law, but having married the beautiful English actress, Elizabeth Arnold, he abandoned law, and in company with his wife, led a wandering life on the stage. The two died within a short time of each other, leaving three children entirely destitute. Edgar, the second son, a bright, beautiful boy, was adopted by John Allen, a wealthy citizen of Richmond. Allen, having no children of his own, became very much attached to Edgar, and used his wealth freely in educating the boy. At the age of seven he was sent to school at Stoke Newington, near London, where he remained for six years. During the next three years he studied under private tutors, at the residence of the Allen's in Richmond. In 1826 he entered the University of Virginia, where he remained less than a year.

After a year or two of fruitless life at home, a cadetship was obtained for him at West Point. He was soon tried by court-martial and expelled from school because he drank to excess and neglected his studies. Thus ended his school days.

In 1829 he published "Al Aaraaf, and Minor Poems." "This work," says his biographer, Mr. Stoddard, "was not a remarkable production for a young gentleman of twenty." Poe himself was ashamed of the volume.

After his stormy school life, he returned to Richmond, where he was kindly received by Mr. Allen. Poe's conduct was such that Mr. Allen was obliged to turn him out of doors, and, dying soon after, he made no mention of Poe in his will.

Now wholly thrown upon his own resources, he took up literature as a profession, but in this he failed to gain a living. He enlisted as a private soldier, but was soon recognized as the West Point cadet and a discharge procured.

His wife died in 1848. His poverty was now such that the press made appeals to the public for his support.

In 1848 he published "Eureka, a Prose Poem."

He went to Richmond in 1849, where he was engaged to a lady of considerable fortune. In October he started for New York to arrange for the wedding, but at Baltimore he met some of his former boon companions, and spent the night in drinking. In the morning he was found in a state of delirium, and died in a few hours.

The pessimism in his poems might be caused by the death of his elder brother Henry, who had been in ill health in part due to problems with alcoholism. His wife also died at an early age, and he was so depressed that he drank a laot.

Here are some of his works, displaying his pessimism and depressing life.

A Dream Within A Dream by Edgar Allan Poe
Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow--
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand--
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep--while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

In this poem, he laments himself and his failed aspirations.

Alone by Edgar Allan Poe
From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were; I have not seen
As others saw; I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I loved, I loved alone.
Then- in my childhood, in the dawn
Of a most stormy life- was drawn
From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, or the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that round me rolled
In its autumn tint of gold,
From the lightning in the sky
As it passed me flying by,
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view.

To My Mother by Edgar Allan Poe
Because I feel that, in the Heavens above,
The angels, whispering to one another,
Can find, among their burning terms of love,
None so devotional as that of "Mother,"
Therefore by that dear name I long have called you-
You who are more than mother unto me,
And fill my heart of hearts, where Death installed you
In setting my Virginia's spirit free.
My mother- my own mother, who died early,
Was but the mother of myself; but you
Are mother to the one I loved so dearly,
And thus are dearer than the mother I knew
By that infinity with which my wife
Was dearer to my soul than its soul-life.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Figurative language is used in this poem in the words
"Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,".
This phrase represents real life, when you are presented with two or more choices, and you have to decide which one to take.

"And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,"

This represents us in our real life decisions, and we do not know what will happen if we made this choice or the other. We try to forsee what the choices will lead to, but fail. Both of the choices seems similar to us.

"And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black."

Represents the fact that there will be no turning back once you choose that path, or that choice.

Why i like this poem
I like this poem as the contents relate to our life in which many choice are made, some which are hard and difficult to make. Also, once you make that choice, you cannot regret it and take the other. Each path is unknown and you cannot forsee what will happen.

Philosophy : Fair and Just Person

If I were to say that I am a fully fair and just person, I would be lying. No one in this world is completely fair and just. Like i said in my post about a perfect world, no one is perfect because of human nature.

For example, if one of your friend or a member of your family went to court, and he or she is accused of theft, who will you support? Your family member, or the so called "victim"? You will obviously support your family member as you have a relationship with them and you do not want them to come to harm. This displays that you are not a fire and just person. Our judgment is usually affected by our emotions and past experiences, and no one has the exact same experiences. Thus, no one is a fair and just p

We can all try as hard as possible to be fair and just. However, we cannot really say that we are totally fair and just. Ultimately, our natural behaviour will still be a factor in our actions and decisions.

Philosophy : Charity

It is not our duty to give to charity, but it is best that we do it. Giving away things that you worked hard to get is not easy, and it is not our duty since the things belong to us. However, giving to charity is strongly recommended, even if it is not your duty. Giving to charity is an action out of your heart. If you do not want to give to charity, might as well not do it, and do not feel forced to. There is no point giving to charity if you cannot bear to part with your item. Charity is basically making the poor richer and the rich abit less rich, thus equalizing everything out, which is ok. If you feel forced to give to charity while you do not want to, you can don't give if your conscience allows.

Charity is started by some kind hearted people who wants to make the world better for other people, people less fortunate that themselves. These people did not do it for fame, money or recognition. They did not ask more people to join because they want to be widely known. They did it because they saw that many people in the world is in deep need of help.

Philosophy : Opinion

No, i do not think we should not criticise people or the opinions they have. This is because we are not perfect ourselves, and our opinions are not necessarily better than that of the other party. If we are not perfect in terms of looks, personality, thoughts, how can we have the right to criticise other people? If we are not perfect ourselves, how can you correct others when you do not even know what is really correct? The same goes with opinion. Opinion is just a matter of perspective, and so if you do not know if your opinion is better, you cannot say other people's opinion is worse than yours. For example, the Allies thought that Hitler was bad, evil, and mad. However, the people of Germany thought that Hitler was a saint, and that Germany conquering the world is best. Here, the opinions of both sides are influenced by external sources. The population of Germany wants world conquest as it will be better for them and they will be richer, but the population of the Allied countries disagreed with them as Germany conquering the world will just make their lives miserable, which they do not desire. The opinions of countries and people only stand for their own interests and wants. Thus, opinion can never be accurate, and you can not criticise others' or their opinions.

Philosophy : Truth

If many people think something is true, it is not necessarily true. The group of people who think that something is true might be influenced by others and so it is not their honest opinion. Also, is a group of people think it is true, it can be because that group wants to gain from that lie, thus saying that it is the truth. The fact that they think is true can also be distorted in the first place, thus it is not the truth. The group that believes that the fact is true can also have been the ones who distort the original truth and so other people will believe them.

Truth is also just a matter of perspective. Truth can be what one wants it to be, and one can distort it without knowing it. For example, a person can leave out parts in an incident that he does not want others to know, and it is also counted as the truth. He can also blow the incident up to a major catastrophe so people will have a wrong impression of the incident.

Philosophy : Perfect World.

I do not think that there exists a perfect world, or will ever exist. this is because of the human mind and personality. Humans, by nature, are selfish and greedy. Even the greatest of all people, the most clean of all people cannot be perfect and will give in to temptation.Even now, i am contemplating to play Counter Strike when i am supposed to do work only. Human nature will never be perfect. Whenever someone tries to create a perfect world, for example, Karl Marx, people ruin it. We will try to cheat, to steal, to rob. Communism is a good example of a perfect world gone wrong. Communism speaks of a perfect world where everyone is equal and no one cheats or steals. Communism was good at the start, but gradually, people started to take advantage. A government was formed, in which the people are higher authority than the peasants, contrary to the teachings of Communism. The government had more power and received more in food and income than the peasants, even when communism is to make everyone equal so there will be no fights. This displays the selfishness and greed in us humans, regardless to the person.

Men have already thought of and came up with many stories about a perfect world, one of them is "Shangri La". Shangri La is a perfect paradise that exists hidden from modern man. In this paradise, no one steals, not one fights and everyone is happy. Everyone is able to sleep with their doors open and if you drop something no one will steal it. In this perfect world, everybody is equal and no one asks for more. This, is the real perfect world.

It has beem a long semester, and i am STARTING to get used to the typical secondary school life. the amount of school work has increased drastically and i have to take precious gaming time to complete it. Anyway, i have been able to cope -- just barely. Classmates are not bad except for a few, those which i do not want to name. They :

  • Distrupts the class with his random cries of ROFL and LMAO
  • He is extremely lame and laugh uncontrollably at the lamest joke
  • He tries to imitate others and fails terribly
  • He cannot take insults
  • He is extremely proud.

My CCA is scouts and the bad thing about it is that we have to go back on Saturday, and i have to wake up at 7:00 AM. Scouts is also not bad, learning many different skills such as how to tie knots and lashings. And foot drills. My absolute favorite is cooking, which you have to start and sustain a fire for cooking. this is not as easy as it seems. You are required to collect firewood and start a fire on the spot. on the menu, there has to be a staple food, e.g rice, and meat which is basically chicken. We did generally better than the other groups and some had their chicken half uncooked.

We also learned lashings and knots in scouts. they are not as easy as they seem and my lashings are usually loose and fall apart easily. However, i got the hang of it soon. Knots were also complicated and there were different knots for different purposes.

Now, as you all know, some major roads in singapore are suffering form. Traffic at these places is extremely packed at peak hours and it takes hours to get through the traffic. To solve this problem, i have decided to increase the charges at the ERP gantries which are at major roads. The Land Transport Authority did this to ease the traffic, not to earn you money. The increase will not be much. I hope there will be no complaints about this action and that the traffic will be smoother in these areas.

NTU Student Stabbing Professor

Recently in the news, there have been a case of NTU student stabbing his professor. The professor was discussing a project with the student. He had his back turned when the student took out a knife and stabbed the professor in his back.

The profressor tried to protect himself but received more cuts on his hand. The student cut his own wrist and ran out of the room. He ran onto a glass roof, where witnesses saw him sitting there for a time. Some people tried to sooth him, but their words fell to deaf ears. Soon after, he fell to his death.

The victim, David Hartanto Widjaja was a bright student who came to Singapore four years ago on an Asean scholarship. However, he was not acting like himself recently. His grades were going down and he was having numerous problems for his project, which was due next month.

His friends claim that he was a genius and was humourous, but he was also a loner. He spent most of his time in his room playing Warcraft. Some people believe that this was the reason of his drop in grades.

I believe that computer games were not the main reason that caused this incident. If he knew how to manage his time, this would not have happened. He also need more social skills and not spend all his time on games. If he had the determination, he could have gotten the time to go out with his friends and do work. My point is, computer games is not the main problem in this incident.

25/2/09

It was another fruitless day for me, another colorless day. It started when i woke up too early in the morning. i took the earlier bus and got to school earlier. Only to discover that it was deserted. To cheer myself up, i tried playing my handphone. However,i got bored of it a few weeks ago. I tried doing my homework, but that idea was messed up too. As i pondered for a solution to solve this diesease of bordom, my eyes swept over the computer. it was just lying there, waiting... waiting... It seemed to call out to me. Use me.... use me!...... Should i use it, and break the rules, or should i leave it. Just when i decided to use it, Nigel barged into class and took it from my grasps. *Sob*. At that moment, a arguement broke out. Matthew claims that we should not use the computer and only IT reps (like me) can use it while Darren opposed it. In the end, nigel managed to beat Matthew in the arguement and Matthew cried. Again. Not a nice way to start my day, isit?

Hopefully more people will join the class forum, especially philmann so we can flame him.

Blog Prompt

People with experience in their work are needed to teach the amature workers. Although some people may not agree with this statement, as they prefer young people in their workforce as they have more strength and can do mroe work than elderly people. They think that old people will just be a hinderance to their work as they are weak and have no strength. However, i think that experience is an important factor in the workforce, as the experienced people know what they are doing, what they are supposed to do and how to do it efficiently. If the people have no experience , they will end up doign things wrongly and in the end, in the end destroying what they are supposed to do.

I am now reviewing the story "The Taximan's Story" from the book "Little Ironies".

The irony of this story is that the taxi driver depends on the young people to earn his living, but he is furious at his daughter for being one.

The story is quite realistic as parents nowdays want their children to be better than others. Some parents are even insensitive to what their child is feeling emotionally. They completely neglect their child's social life.

The taximan is overprotective of her daughter and want to keep her away from "bad influence" no matter what, so her daughter can do well. i do not feel sympathy for him as he is simply abusing his daughter. he is jsut thinking about her future and not her present.

I agree with his lamenting as although i do not completely support it. i agree with it as her daughter should not be doing these sort of thing and i disagree as the meaning of life is not to study. her study is good enough already but still her father still wants it to be better.

I feel sympathy for the taximan's daughter as she is being abused and mistreated by her father in wanting her to do well in her studies. she is restricted to what she can do, which is only go to school. other than that all she can do is stay at home.
